294. The Hawthorne Legacy (2021) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

“The Inheritance Games ended with a bombshell, and now heiress Avery Grambs has to pick up the pieces and find the man who might hold the answers to all of her questions – including why Tobias Hawthorne left his entire fortune to Avery, a virtual stranger, rather than to his own daughters or grandsons. Thanks to a DNA test, Avery knows that she’s not a Hawthorne by blood, but clues pile up hinting at a deeper connection to the family than she had ever imagined. As the mystery grows and the plot thickens, Grayson and Jameson, the enigmatic and magnetic Hawthorne grandsons, continue to pull Avery in different directions. And there are threats lurking around every corner, as adversaries emerge who will stop at nothing to see Avery out of the picture – by any means necessary.”

The thing with this book was that it wasn’t terrible but it also wasn’t great. Compared to The Inheritance Games, this one just didn’t live up to what I thought it would be. While it isn’t the most realistic book to start with, it just felt that little bit more unbelievable due to how fast these characters were guessing the riddles that were left for them! I honestly think that this factor was the most infuriating part of the book for me, of all things.

Along with this, is seemed to be very back and forth and held a weird pace throughout. It almost feels like this and the previous book could have been one; it’s almost like a story was split and published in two separate parts. With this being the case, I think that the beginning of the next book could have the same feel to it.

I know that there are a lot of people out there who are huge fans of the romance and love triangle aspect of this book but I honestly couldn’t care about it. Even though Avery is not actually related to the Hawthorne brothers, there was a lot of stuff between the lines that could have convinced other people otherwise. It just took me back to the Mortal Instruments days (if you know, you know) and I’ve had enough of that thank you very much.

With all of this being said, however, I will purchase The Final Gambit eventually and see the trilogy out, perhaps even choose to pick up The Brothers Hawthorne if the next book picks up and leaves me wanting more with a cliffhanger.

All the love,

Jade x
