What We Already Know About Scream (2022)

*Small theories and potential spoilers for Scream 5*

A nice little end to the Scream week I’ve had going here, what we already know about the new Scream movie.

According to IMDb, Scream, it’s offical title, is about a woman who returns to her home town to try and find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes, and is set to be released on January 14th 2022. This sounds a lot like the plot of Scream 4 (2011), where Sidney returns to Woodsboro and a series of killings begin again. Some speculate that it isn’t going to be Sidney returning, but a new character, maybe Melissa Barrera’s character, called Sam Carpenter.

Both Melissa and Jenna Ortega have been cast with surnames of Carpenter, with Jenna’s character called Tara. This is obviously a reference to John Carpenter, the famous director of Halloween, and it’s not the first time they’ve referenced him and his films, with Halloween being the movie shown at the party in the first film.

While some think that it won’t be Sidney returning, it has been confirmed that the original Woodsboro trio, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, will be back to reprise their roles, but I think that one of them won’t make it to the end of the movie. Neve revealed that she was very apprehensive about returning as it wouldn’t have a Wes Craven direction, and the new directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, known as Radio Silence and the film Ready or Not (2019), sent her a letter, letting her know that he was one of their biggest inspiration’s and they wanted to honour him with the film, which was what convinced her to return to her iconic role.

This movie is the second of the franchise not to be written by Kevin Williamson, but it can still be good, because the third one wasn’t written by him, and we all know that I love that one, no matter of the critical reviews.

Much like Scream 4, there is a whole new cast of characters, with names I know as well as names I’ve never heard of before. Among the names I’ve heard of are Jenna Ortega, known for her role in You (2018), Dylan Minnette, known for his role in 13 Reasons Why (2017) and his singing career with his band Wallows, and Mason Gooding, known for his roles in Booksmart (2019) and Love, Victor (2020). I’ve enjoyed their roles in what I’ve seen them in, and look forward to see their portrayals in Scream.

There are a lot of actors who I hadn’t heard of, but I still look forward to seeing them, and being introduced to new actors, such as; Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sonia Ammar, Kyle Gallner and Mikey Madison.

There have been some character names confirmed, and they have recognisable names, so I have an idea of who they could be.

Dylan Minnette plays a character called Wes Hicks, and seems to be related to Deputy Judy Hicks from Scream 4. Naminy him Wes is obviously a homage to Wes Craven, and I love Dylan so I am so happy that he’s been cast as this character, and I just know that he’s going to do a great job. I also think that since Judy was obsessed with Dewey (David Arquette) in the last movie, something in me thinks that they had an affair, since he and Gale (Courteney Cox) have had a rocky past. I think that if this is the case, Wes will be their child, and some sort of an outcast, as Gale won’t like him which we’ve seen Dylan play and do a good job at before.

Mason Gooding has been cast as Chad Meeks-Martin and Jasmin Savoy Brown has beeen cast as Mindy Meeks-Martin, and they are more than likely going to be Martha Meeks’ (Heather Matarazzo), Randy’s (Jamie Kennedy) sister’s children, maybe twins. She made an appearance in the third movie when she handed over the video of Randy announcing the new rules, and never since.

In the wrap photos, the background looks like a set made to look like what people think is Stu Macher’s house from the first movie, and nobody knows why. Unless it’s the fan favourite theory that Stu actually survived, fingers crossed. Or maybe it could be a relative of his that we haven’t seen before, who knows?

It was announced not long ago that they have wrapped filming and there is a rough cut out there that a select few have seen, and there is a chance that we could expect a trailer around Halloween and until then, I guess I’ll be rewatching the four movies more times than I can count.
